Inverno in vigna!

Chiara Condello:

A Winemaker's Diary

15 Febbraio 2022

Winter is one of my favourite moments in the vineyards. It is usually undervaluated: the landscape is less blooming, the days are shorter and colder and many people avoid visiting the vineyards during the winter months. For me as winemaker they are a treasure: the work we do in winter will affect in a great way the future season. The way we prune and work the soil will impact on the quality and quantity of the harvest, it is like education for child, it is the footprint for future happiness.

In the cellar winter time is quite a calm moment, we put the new wines in the oak and move out those who have already finished their ageing period. It is a moment of rest for the wines, a sort of sleep that save energy and at the same time enhance the balance of the wine, waiting for the warm to enter the cellar again and wake up the wines.

In recent years winter is a very critical moment for agricolture in general and also for us, because the climate change is making critical changes to the season cycle. We are experiencing more and more warm February and March with some frost in April that is affecting the production. Unfortunately this trend seems to become more and more frequent and some region are really struggling fighting against these changes. It is important that everyone is taking act against that.

All the winemakers and the earth will thank you for protecting it for future generations!
